Karamoja is a remote region in northeastern Uganda and covers nearly one-sixth of the country’s land area. This semiarid land, bordering South Sudan, is home to about 1.2 million Karamojong people. Life here is incredibly difficult. Rainfall is unpredictable, development is minimal and most communities live without access to running water or basic infrastructure.

When Divine Care Ministries first entered Karamoja in 2010, our team encountered extreme poverty, widespread illiteracy, and communities burdened by years of violence and hopelessness. Yet, beneath these challenges, we found a deep desire for change. Many Karamojong have now embraced the Gospel and longed for a better future for their children.

To meet this need, we established 6 Early Childhood Development Centers, where more than 1,000 children are now receiving a foundational education and learning about the love of Christ. We also support students who continue on to primary, secondary, and even tertiary education. Many of these young learners have become some of the top performers and emerging leaders in their schools.

However, many of our centers still meet under trees or in temporary shelters, with limited access to furniture, books, and basic learning materials. These children have the passion to learn, they simply need the tools to do it.
